57th Annual Home Tour
Chi Omega House
1525 Washtenaw Avenue

Chi Omega House

On Washtenaw Avenue half a block south of South University
on the left/east side of Washtenaw Avenue before Hill Street.
Parking: Use the driveway on the left of the house to park in the back.

This attractive Chi Omega Sorority House with its multi-story white pillared porch was built for Eta Chapter in 1951, the fIrst chapter house built near the U of M campus specifically to be a Chi Omega House. Six years later in 1957 the back bedroom wing and portico were added. This 17,000 square foot house includes bedrooms on three floors, a living room, dining room, kitchen, and other living/study space, including the basement area. During the school year, there are sophomore and junior actives who live in the house. Freshmen and seniors do not live in the house.

The three earlier chapter houses were converted residences. The fIrst home for Eta Chapter of Chi Omega, which was established on the U of M campus in 1905, was at 718 South Ingalls and active sorority women lived there until 1915. The next house on East University, about one block from East Quad, was the chapter house from 1915-1925, and the third house located at 1503 Washtenaw housed actives until 1950. This current house, a campus home for hundreds of women for 58 years, has had numerous updates.

Chi Omega Sorority was founded at the University of Arkansas on April 5, 1895. Eta Chapter of Chi Omega was established on the U of M campus in 1905, as the sixteenth Chi Omega chapter in the nation. It has been a member of Greek system at U of M for 105 years. Eta chapter is managed by a non-profit corporation of Chi Omega Alumnae volunteers who maintain the house. Alumnae volunteers also serve as advisers to the active chapter as well as participate in an alumnae chapter. There is a staff of fIve paid employees.

Over the 105 year history of Chi Omega at the University of Michigan, 1601 women have been members of the chapter.
