Mark Clague
Associate Dean for Academic and Student Affairs,
School of Music, Theater & Dance, University of Michigan
The Legacy of Motown Music
Mark Clague researches all forms of music making in the United States, with recent projects focusing on the United States national anthem, American orchestras as institutions (especially in early Chicago and San Francisco), the Atlanta School of composers, Sacred Harp music, and the music of George and Ira Gershwin. Dr. Clague’s City Club program will explore how Motown Records transformed the landscape of American popular music, ushering in an era of independent labels and recalibrating jazz-based soul as the “Sound of Young America.”
